General Teaching Tips for Teachers

Tip No. 1: Join a Professional Organization
Joining a professional organization should ensure your teaching doesn't get distracted by factors outside of the classroom. Make sure you research the school you intend to work for and try talking with other teachers working there. This will make your whole teaching experience much more enjoyable and worthwhile.

Tip No. 2: Prepare Yourself Properly For Class
Ensuring you've put in enough preparation for your class is one of the keys to being a successful EFL teacher. The work that you put in generally reflects the result you get out. An important motto to remember is 'Fail to prepare, Prepare to fail'.

Tip No.3: Remember the Four Ps
It's essential for good teachers to know and apply the four Ps. Although it may seem a bit much, it's important to remember it's you the teacher that will be standing at the top of the classroom in front of the class. Just in case you forgot the four Ps are as follows -
Powerful lesson plans and accompanying materials are all planned and ready for use - meaningful, useful, relevant, with opportunities to be creative and emotional

Parameters are clear at all times - general and specific ground rules, procedures, and directions

Participation is needed to be developed- students are actively engaged and on task; direct instruction provides for student involvement

Positive attitude - teacher models a positive mental attitude towards students and classroom activities

Tip No. 4: Always give Clear Guidelines.
When teaching a course, the teacher should always give clear guidelines to students at the beginning. These should include not only what course work is expected from students, but also the teacher's expectations as to attendance, punctuality, homework, etc. This will help prevent misunderstandings and problems later.

Tip No. 5: Present Information in Manageable chunks.
When delivering a lesson it's vital that the core point is broken down and presented in manageable chunks of information for the student. Remember that this is a second language for students and a lot of what you say may be missed or misunderstood.

Tip No. 6: Dress Professionally.
It's important the students respect the effort that their teacher is making for them. By dressing in a professional manner it gives the students more confidence in their teacher's ability. It will also help you feel more comfortable and feel more professional.

Tip No. 7: Consult Other Teachers.
It's absolutely essential to discover the trade secrets of the TEFL world. The surest way of doing this is by asking questions of experienced TEFL teachers who should be able to give you pointers in what works and doesn't work in varying classroom situations. Their experience is invaluable so make sure that you use it.

Tip No. 8: Have a Backup plan.
You never know what's going to go wrong and when so it's worth making a rule of always having a spare exercise or language game up your sleeve. It's also worth having more materials than you strictly need for a lesson, as it is sometimes unpredictable how fast a class will work through the materials prepared for a particular lesson.

Tip No. 9: Maintain control in the Classroom.
It's vital to remember that students learn best in classrooms that are well managed. From the outset the teacher should always lay out the ground rules for how they expect their students to behave. It's essential to start out the way you intend to carry on. By doing this it will ensure the students understand the boundaries in which they are meant to work within. This will give you the respect you need in order to maximize classroom learning.

Tip No. 10: Personalize the Classroom.
Students like to see their work being valued. One method of doing this is to hang students' work up on the walls of the classroom. The result is the students devote more interest and pride to their studies. This is especially important with younger groups.

General Study Tips for Students

Tip No. 1: Weekly Goals.
Every week stop and think about what is most important to you. It's common to focus only on a particular aspect of your learning but is that enough for you. Take some time to stop and set a goal for yourself every week, you will notice the progress you are making. By adopting this approach you will become more motivated by how quickly you are learning. This feeling of success will inspire you to learn even more.

Tip No. 2: Divide up your Goals. If you feel that one or all of goals you've set yourself is too large then don't panic. In this case it's best to divide up your goal into its various component tasks. By making it smaller in more manageable chunks it should help you to map out your path of achieving your intended goal.

Tip No. 3: Time Management.
A successful method of learning is to create a weekly schedule outlining your daily expectations. By adopting this approach it should eventually become part of your study routine. This process produces truly effective study patterns.

Tip No. 4: Apply Your Weekly Schedule.
A lot of students start out with the best intentions. They work out a good schedule but then only apply it for a few weeks before losing track. It's essential to stick to the timetable you set yourself. Only by doing this can you ensure effective study.

Tip No. 5: Review New Information Before Bed. Research has shown that our brains process information that is fresh in our brains while we sleep. By going over some exercise before you sleep, your brain will work away on this information while you sleep.

Tip No. 6: Take Study Breaks.
Its best not to study for prolonged periods as concentration deteriorates over time. Every 35 - 45 minutes take a 10 minute break. This will ensure much more effective study.

Tip No. 7: Make your Notes Useful.
The reason you take notes is to make the information you've seen in class more comprehensible to you the learner. By giving depth to your notes you will make the retrieval of the studied information both easier and quicker. Remember 'small is beautiful'. Try not to have long lists of notes. Keep short notes that trigger areas of knowledge.

Tip No. 8: Speak English Aloud.
You need to practice the act of speaking often. Speaking by yourself at home and reading the exercises you are doing will help connect your brain to your facial muscles and improve pronunciation and make your knowledge active.

Tip No. 9: Get Enough Sleep. Getting enough sleep is very important to achieve effective study. It's best to sleep in regular adequate patterns. Eight hours is probably the ideal amount although it does vary from individual to individual. Other important things to do are to exercise and eat well.

Tip No. 10: Put yourself in an English Environment
The best way to develop your language is to use your skills in a "real world" situation. Learning English in a classroom is important, but putting your English knowledge into practice in real situations will improve your fluency in speaking English. If you do not know of any "real life" situation, create new ones for yourself by using the Internet to listen to news, write English responses in forums, exchange emails in English with email pals, etc.
